A tale from our core book pack

One to Ten and Back Again

(one more; one less)

  • Read the story with your child
  • Count the objects on each page together
  • Can your child say which number comes next before you turn each page? Which number comes next when we count?
  • Together, count to check how many there are.
  • Stress the phrase “one more” to your child when counting forward
  • Stress the phrase “one less” to your child when counting backward
  • Beyond One to Ten and Back Again:

Play a ‘one more; one less’ game:

  • Say the numbers on the cards 1 – 10 with your child
  • Place them face down, each time you turn over a card, say the number you see, then say the number that is 1 more; then say the number that is 1 less

Sing some number rhymes together with a counting focus:

  • 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Once I Caught a Fish Alive
  • 1, 2 Buckle My Shoe
  • One Man Went to Mow
